doing great!

Hi everyone! Maine is beautiful! the sun is shinning and the weather is ffinnee! Wednesday was an amazing day for me because it was the FINAL day of our climbing training! Thanks to Andrew i am now qualified to operate the high ropes course, zipline, low ropes course and of course the climbing wall. After having 13 hour days i can't say i am sad it is over but, i am defiantly glad it happened. I will probably never in my life get to go on a zipline twice, do all the high elements and rock climb. It was truly the experience of a lifetime. I also formed great friendships with the climbing people! On Thursday about 160 other cabin staff unloaded on to Camp! Baxter campus had a huge addition of about 20 girls and they are awesome! I am so lucky that I am going to get to work with the ladies of Baxter all summer! Staff orientation has been so amazing and it feels like i am back at summer camp! We have been playing ice breaker games, speed dating, having campus wars and wearing some crazy clothes! OH AND I WON BINGO AND GOT A T-SHIRT! Next Saturday 500 campers will arrive here at Camp Laurel but, we are working really hard to get ready for them! Stay tuned for some pictures of my day off in freeport in just a few days! Miss you all! Send me a letter!

Made it!

Hello all! Thanks to all of your prayers I successfully made it to Camp Laurel at about noon yesterday! I woke up at 5 am to finish packing and catch my 7am flight to philly. Once i got to philly I had to catch a literally airport bus across the airport to get to my gate and catch my flight to Portland, Maine where i got picked up from the airport. I braved the airports like a champ! Camp is absolutely beautiful! The lake is shimmering and the landscape is beautiful! For the past 2 evenings that i have been here the sunset has been breathtaking especially on the lake! Oh and the food is good too! Only about 25% of the staff is here but i really like all of the people i have met so far! My day today was jam packed! I left my cabin at 730am and got back at 8pm this evening! I am pooooped and I have to get up and do it all over again tomorrow! We have been training to work on the rock wall and ropes courses. I really like all of the people i am with! Right now i have two roommates and they are super cool, both from new England area, and we have a lot in common! One of the things we learned how to operate today was something called "the flying squirrel". I got to do this today while the sun was setting and it was so gorgeous and such an adrenaline rush!

Camp Laurel

THIS IS IT! All of you have heard me blabbing about this for months and the time has finally come for me to leave for camp in Maine! I would like to, first, thank everyone for being my support system and for  getting me to this point in my life. This dream began as a camper at crosspoint and chaperoning and leading beach camp, campouts and camp jonah has all all been in preparation for this summer. For those of you that are not aware of what I am doing I will be working as a Climbing instructor and cabin counselor at Camp Laurel in Readfield, Maine. I have never been to Maine, I have never been to this Camp, and i know nobody that I am going to be with.  All of the stress and fears have been building up  this past week but, in a surreal moment I am stopping to really look these fears in the face and acknowledge the fact that whether i sink or swim is up to me. For all of my friends and family reading this please know how much i will miss you and how thankful i am that you all provided encouragement when i needed it!  There is a part of my that wishes i was staying in Wilmington but i know my calling is elsewhere. The lyrics to Casting Crowns' song "Jesus friend of Sinners" the lyrics are...

Open our eyes to the world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led my mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks yours.

I hope that all of you will write to me and follow my blog! I am having a little competition this summer! Whoever can write me the best/most creative letter while I am at camp will get a souvenir!!! So...in the letter maybe include t-shirt size and favorite color! I have artsy and creative friends, i have high expectations for all of you!

Best of Both Worlds

2 weeks ago I  left Boone kicking and screaming and as sad as it was to leave freshman year behind, what i came home to was not too shabby. I came back to Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach! This past afternoon, while walking Mercer, I was reminded just how beautiful Wilmington is, especially Masonboro Sound, my side of town. The sun was setting and casting a beautiful light on the huge oak trees that arc over the street. Between sunsets in Boone and Sunsets here i truly have the best of both worlds. Lets hope that Maine can provide with some incredible scenery, but, i have no doubts that it will.

This is such a great time of year because it isn't too hot in May. July and August are scorching so May is perfect.  I have been having a blast going to the beach and on the boat. Today i went out on David's boat with jojo and lizzy! We had a little dispute with the current but luckily resourceful David roped us in....literally. Despite the current the water felt great and we all got some good sun! Also, shout out to Don Vigus for taking us tubing a few days ago. I was incredibly sore but tubing with the FBC gang again was just like old times and brought back some unforgettable memories. I even got to watch my baby Payton go to her Jr. Prom. She looked incredibly beautiful! I still see her as my scrawny ginger with braces and bangs. We have come a long wayyy sistafriend. It is amazing how my friends and i have been apart for so long but once we come back together it is like nothing has changed. It has been awesome sitting on the beach and sharing college stories....some good...some bad. It is hard to describe to my friends just how amazing Boone is. Words or pictures just do not do it justice.

Less than three weeks until i leave for Camp Laurel in Maine! It you guys want quality HayUp time you need to hit me up soon. So sad that my baby Leah is leaving me on Sunday for France! France Smance Leah! My room is seriously a disaster from unpacking, repacking and cleaning out my closet! I found out the themes for our camp night activites and they are Hawiian, 80's, Square Dancing, Carnival and of course 4th of July. So...if any of you want to throw some of that stuff my way that would be greatly appreciated. EXCEPT if any of you saw airbands circa 2009 then you will know that i have the perfect 80's dress.

Here are some recent pics of  the 910

910 or Bust

Wow these last few weeks have been an emotional blur. So many goodbyes from leaving and hellos from coming home. These last few weeks of my freshman year were savored and defiantly memorable. We went to hebron rock colony (one of our favorite places), out to eat to our favorite restaurants one last time and spent as most time enjoying Boone and each other as we could. No words can describe how amazing my freshman year  of college. I met some of he most inspiring and incredible people. Every day i was challenged to be a better person and throughout the year i discovered so much about myself. Looking back on the freshman girl i started out as in August i have transitioned so much! Watch out world HayUp isnt a child anymore. Saying goodbye to everybody was so hard and i even had a little melt down with my dad on the way home. I did cry because it was over but smiled because it happened and realized it was only getting started. Freshman year was just a preview as to whats to come and this was only the group work for the future. I would like to thank my roomate (Sydney Hale who doesnt read my blog) for listening to me snore, letting me have my privacy when i needed it ;), watching dance moms with me and mostly for listening to my stories, whether heartbreak or hysterical.

Being back in Wilmington was hard at first but now I am so happy i am home and realized how much i missed it. I have a great start to my summer tan, i got to see my granny today and i am home with my mom, dad and SNUGGLES (mercer too). I had a bonfire with my old youth minister and some old youth group friends a few days ago on masonboro island and it was incredible. We had a fun filled evening fellow shipping, worshiping, eating Bojangles, making smores and watching the sun go down. Thank you lord for night after night painting the sky for us! Today my WONDERFUL MOTHER took me out to La Costa and to see the Lucky One! YUMMMYYYYY it was so great and the move was such a great chick flick! I have less than a month until I leave for Maine so hola atcha girl if you want to hang!

We went under the waterfall of Hebron Rock Colony! So beautiful looking at the waterfull from behind the water! It was cold but soooo worth it!
Sunset on Masonboro!
Last night at LOOSSSSS

Leaps of Faith

One of my favorite bible verses is Hebrews 11:1, "faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of we do not see." Sometimes being a woman of faith isn't as easy and it isn't without its trials and tribulations. Many of you may have heard that 1) i have decided to go to Maine this summer to be a camp counselor and 2) that Claire Mayes has decided to transfer to UNC next year. Obviously making a summer decision and a life decision are two different things but after talking to Claire about it we discovered our decisions were not that different. We both were faced with opportunities to go out of our comfort zones and were feeling the pressure from others around us to make the right decision. I got offered my job to go to Maine in mid January and i had about two weeks to make my decision. I really did not have to decide where I wanted to go to college so this was the biggest decision i have ever had to make. I revived endless support from my family, friends and teachers to go to Maine but ultimately this was my decision. Of all the words of wisdom people tried to give me this was probably the most convincing piece of advice....

I found this on Pinterest and when I read it i knew that good ole Walt had a point and I needed to have the courage and the faith in God to trust that this was what I was supposed to do. Inside everyone is a passion, a dream and a purpose but so many fall short because they don't have the determination, motivation and courage to pursue them.
I am so happy for Claire for taking the opportunity to go to her dream school even though it means leaving Boone! Almost all of my crazy freshman adventures happened with her right by my side. I don't know what I am going to do without her next year! I am so proud of Claire for having the courage to pursue her dreams of going to Carolina!

Let's toast to Claire, Maine, Courage and God's Amazing plans for each of us!

That's all I got for now folks. Exams are coming up so i can't promise a whole lot is going to happen but i will be sure to keep muh fans informed. Thanks for reading peeps!

MUCH LOVE,
HAYUP

Devils Cellar

I just wanted to take this time t say thank you to all of my readers! My last post got 77 views in 4 hours! Keep reading and i will keep writing.

This past Sunday i went with Outdoor Programs to Devil's Cellar in the Linville Gorge area. Now much to Claire's thoughts was not my place of birth. HA! It was probably the most beautiful day in the Boone Area yet this year! It was sunny and warm and the perfect day for hiking and climbing. Fun Fact for the day! The reason it is called Devil's Cellar is because it casts a shadow of the devil on the rocks. I really enjoyed climbing and hiking all day long! I was completely worn out by the end of the day but it was so worth it! I even got a "red neck" from the hot sun! This climbing experience was different from other times because i climbed a lot within the crack I cannot really describe my climbing experience but here are some pictures so you can see for yourself!

This is at the bottom of the cellar. We climbed on the left hand side.
This is a top view before we hiked down.
EUKY!!!!!!
This is me climbing! I am straight cheesin here because i was in a lot of pain after climbing to the top.

A little late but....EASTER WEEKEND!!

Wow, time is flying by. I cannot believe that it is already April and Easter has already come and gone! It felt great to have the entire family together! Mom, Dad, Jannell, Snuggles, Mercer and Myself....one big happy family! Not only was Easter weekend filled with celebration for our risen savior but also for the engagement of Jannell and Brian! In less than 8 short months my big sister is getting married! However, if you know anything about the Uptons or the Dunaways then you know we aren't waiting until December to start celebrating! We kicked of the engagement with a FABULOUS engagement party at the Hanover Sea Side Club..my summer home. We had about 120 of our closest friends and family there to celebrate. In addition we had delicious food from Angie's of Chris' Restaurant, great decorations great music and beautiful decorations that we all worked very hard on! Jannell and Brian had friends come in from LA and Brooklyn to celebrate with her. Obviously I, the Maid of Honor, enjoyed myself! My two best friends Emily and Chamberlain were there along with my Aunt Beverly, 92 year old Granny, Uncle Robert and my future brother-in-law/old friend Kevin! I ate, drank(sprite zero) and danced the night away with my family and friends. Just when you thought the night couldn't get any better the moon started GLOWING! Over the water this was one of the most beautiful moons I have ever seen. Jannell said this was truly a "nod form God" and a true testament of his blessing for Jannell and Brian.

With all of the crazy commotion of the Engagement Party we had a very low key Easter. We were kindly invited to the Dunaways for brunch because they had quite a bit of family in town. Because of this we did break tradition and went to the 9:00 service at our church. I wasn't quite on board with going to the service but after words of wisdom from my mom she encouraged me to go and said that the combining of two families requires us to start new traditions. It was worth it to get to spend Easter with my family and my soon to be extended family. After brunch I went straight to the beach with Caitlin and Connor to try and savor all the beach time I had before I had to come back to the Mountains.

After the party and Easter I spent the last two days of my break in complete chill mode. I went to the beach, laid by the pool, at tremendous amounts of leftovers and spent time with my mom and dad. As much as i love Boone and the Mountains it was a challenge leaving the beach! Just 3 short weeks until HayUp will be back in the 910....but only for a month!

I would like to give shout outs to....
-Brittni Winslow, a fellow bridesmaid and admirer of the blog, that i finally got to meet at the party.
-Zach Stone and Chamberlain for holding me accountable to keep the fans informed and to make time to blog.
AND LAST
-Sarah McCullough!!! I didn't get to see you and i am soo sorry! I miss you so much and I know you don't like my blog but hopefully this will warm you up!

Euky and i went on an adventure yesterday but i will have to wait until tomorrow to blog about it!

Enjoy some pics!!

LOVE ALWAYS,
HAYUP

Justified

As many of you may know or not know I am a recreation major. I started out as a communications major but after my fall at Appalachian I decided to switch to recreation. I have hopes of becoming a travel agent and an international event planner.

For my intro to recreation and leisure I was required to attend a recreation management event. My teach Dr. Joy James, who has become one of my favorite people, lead the hike. We started out at Moses Cone along the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was a part of the parkway I have never seen before. It was more of a carriage pathway with wide open mountain ranges. The sunset was beautiful and along with the change of scenery it was also a change of colors that I had never seen before on the parkway. Sunset was beautiful but after that the darkness started to become eerie. However, the darkness and rains clouds in the sky only added to the hike and made it even more of an adventure. Those rain clouds finally let their bottom fall out and the rain came. As recreation majors we pursued on and continued. The winding road leads to overlooks of Blowing Rock and Boone and finally a fire tower. This fire tower was about 5 flights high with not a whole lot of siding. Also the rain and darkness only added to my nerves of climbing up this fire tower. I am proud to say that all of us made it up and down without any injuries. Standing on top of this tower overlooking my college and surrounded by my friends that share my same love for adventure justified my decision to become a recretion major.

During this hike I talked to a guy in my class who as aactually hiked the entire appalachian trail. It took him 5 months and 3 pairs of new shoe to hike north from Georgia to Maine. Hearing him talk about is experience made me realize that he could do it so could I or anyone for that matter. I also got to discuss studyind abroad with my professor. Knowing that in a year and a half I could be studying abroad anywhere is an overwhelming but exciting experience.

Right now I am on my way home from Boone and cannot wait to be with my family to celebrate my sisters engagement but also Easter! Get out your sundress ladies becuas e everybody knows that easter Sunday is the social debeut of the season!

Lifelines

For my Public Speaking class we had to create lifeline speeches it had to include....
-metaphor for my life
-visual aid
- 3 important events
-mission statement

So...i figured i would share my lifeline with my fans/readers/h8ers

I am like water, i flow, i travel, i freeze and i definitely need to be filtered. Just like water reaches great depths throughout the world i want to reach great depths in my life. Water gives us life and i will try to live a life worth living. My visual aid is my nalgene. My dad gave it to me in the 7th grade for chirstmas because all i wanted that year was a nalgene. I just recently started a picture collage where i take my nalgene everywhere i go and take its picture so i always remember where i have been. Each time i take a new picture i am challenged to continue and to go other places beyond my comfort zone. Three important events in my life were (in no particular order) 1. Being a part of FBC youth group. Those 6 years of my life that i spent in youth group molded me into the person i am today. It provided me with my best friends (SHOUT OUT EMILY AND CHAMBERLAIN #TRINITY), many travels and adventures and most of all the opportunities to serve the lord and others. 2. My dad's quadruple bypass in 2009. I will spare everybody the details but it is a constant reminder of how fortunate i am to have a father to go home to. 3. My trip to Bimini, which technically was during youth group, but being on that trip and seeing God's great creations inspired me to become a recreation so i can further my travels and see the world. It is my mission to be a woman of god and through God's grace i will strive to pursue my goals and be a light into the world.

Sorry for such a sentimental posts but i want my friends to hold me accountable and encourage me throughout my life.

This is a picture of EUKY (my nalgene) on speech day!!!!

SPRING BREAK 2012

Sorry this has taken so long i have been having some computer troubles for a few days! WOW! Spring break was awesome and just what i needed. I got to see every member of my family and take plenty of food! I am going to give you the day by day break down and include some pictures of my spring break!

Monday: As much as i hate to admit this on the internet i got my hair cut and highlighted at BANGZ hair salon along with a nice, painful eyebrow waxing. I was looking too good for my day ahead. After my morning at Bangz i took all of my old teachers cookies at Hoggard and got to chat with them for a while. SHOUT OUT MR. MASON. It is kind of sad to think that the famous Hayley Upton no longer walks those halls....kinda surprised that the walls are still standing without me. After Hoggard i had lunch with my GRANNY! I hadn't seen her in since thanksgiving so we were so glad to see each other! We had a delicious lunch at temptations and she wanted to hear all about my life at a mountaineer! After a fun day i spent the rest of the night getting ready for CHARLESTON!

Tuesday: Caitlin and i got up and drove to charleston! It was my first big highway drive and i must say i did pretty well! Didnt exactly make the best time but didn't get lost and didnt get a speeding ticket! My sister lives in the heart of downtown charleston so we got to walk everywhere! When we got to charleston we went straight to the battery and got a snack! Then we went back walking downtown and grabbed dinner, a redbox and some FROYO.

Wednesday: This was a fun-filled and busy day! Caitlin and i got up early to hit up shopping on king street and the FOREVER 21 which was HUGE! Too bad i am pale and broke and wasnt quite in the mood to try on a whole lot. We had the kicken chicken for lunch that was delicious! We went walking on king street and ran into Elizabeth Morton who goes to C of C and that was a total surprise that we were not expecting but we got an ice cream sample from here and it was nice to see a familiar face! We went to the market where caitlin found a big piggy that she blames me for not buying! We say some pretty unique stuff at the market along with a pretty unique group of people. After we went shopping we went to pick up one of my very best friends ZACH EULO from the Citadel along with HEATH TRYER! (WE MISSED YOU BURTON) The boys looked super snazzy in their citadel attire. I think we embarrassed poor zachy when we got out of the car and took pictures as he was walking out. Sorry we aren't sorry. We took the boys to get some real food at wild wing cafe, went to the candy shop, walked to the battery and got them some ice cream! It was so good to see them and I know they were glad to get off campus. After we took the boys back to the Citadel caitlin and i got dressed for dinner and walked downtown. We went to YO BURRITO which was good and a fun atmosphere but wayyy overpriced. Made me miss Los Amigos in Boone Town. Caitlin and i walked around downtown and even weaseled out way up to the ROOFTOP bar even though we are under 21. It had an awesome view and the manager even volunteered to take our picture! Wednesday was a crazy day and the second i layed down i fell asleep.

Thursday: Caitlin and i go up, went to eat, finally got a hotdog and then drove back to wilmington. We drove straight to the beach to try to get some sunshine for the last few hours of the afternoon! shout out to CLAIRE MAYES WHO CAME TO WILMINGTON! Thursday was also my dad's birthday and as a good daughter i picked up some flaming amy's bowl for him.

Friday: Friday was a pretty relaxing day and just what i needed after a busy week. I went to the beach and got sun and then went on a great 3 mile run. BUT, the most exciting part of the day was going to Ruth's Chris to celebrate my dad's birthday. Ruth's Chris is probably one of the nicest, most expensive restaurant in Wilmington. It was delicious. I have never had such amazing steak in all of my life. My mom and i even got a cheesecake and dayyuuummm that was delicious. Even though my dad doesnt eat steak or cheesecake my mom and i enjoyed it enough for him.

Overall my spring break was amazing and just what i needed. PLUS i booked my flight to Maine making this summer feel even closer! I am glad to be back in Boone with my friends but nothing beats being at Wrightsville beach and at home with your family. Going home always humbles me and reminds me of how i was raised. I know i am where i am supposed to be but it never fails that my mom and i get a little teary eyed as we say goodbye.

***special shout outs****

DUNNA- for always being a great friend and because i left you off of my last post

Caitlin-for going with me to charleston

Jannell-for letting me stay with you

until next time,

Nothing Beats Home

I got home Thursday night and it feels wonderful to be back in the warm 910 air! My mom has been buying me all of my favorite foods and i have been snuggling with Mercer. Nothing beats jackson's bbq,pt's, hibacchi and flaming amy's! I am going to have to work out extra hard next week after all i have been eating! Meatloaf tonight courtesy of Beth and it is one of my favorite meals!

It feels great to have gotten so see all my friends this weekend! Shout out to.....BURTON, JOHANNA, ELIZABETH, CAMPBELL, ELLE(HAPPY ALMOST BDAY), MOLLY (HER FRIEND LILLY), CONNOR, CHAMBERLAIN, EMILY, SARAH, LIZ ALEXANDER AND...DRUM ROLLL....CHRIS ARMSTRONG! Even though i only got to see everybody for a little bit it was still good just to get some quick hugs! However, as much as i love my friends i am a little excited to have Wilmington to my self and get some much needed shut eye and some quality family time with my parents. I also can't wait to venture down to Charleston with Caitlin do see the blushing bride and do some shopping. Oh and seeing one of my very best friends Zach at the Citadel! If anyone has ever driven with me before then you will know to say a little prayer on Tuesday around 10.

I was so blessed and happy to be able to be with my parents in church this morning. It was so nice to be surrounded by love from my parents and my church family. I am about to go see this Means War with my Mommy and i cant wait! It is a little hard to get to the movies in Boonetown!

This is a note to all my blog haters out there...you know who you are...keep on hating.

Lucky 3/3

Thanks to my good friend claire she introduced me to the luckiness of March 3. I think it is safe to say that all of my friends and i had a great time this weekend and March 3 no doubt played a hand in it.

My weekend started off on a good note with english ending early! I had a really productive day and met a new friend shannon! The girls and i went to dinner and then celebrated friday night! But saturday was where the magic happened! Saturday started with the traditional saturday breakfast with Caitlin where we ran into all of our friends and we all shared about our friday nights. I think i saw everybody i knew at breakfast in central. After that i went on king street and out to lunch with a friend and he bought me candy from MAST. Probably shouldn't have eaten it but of course i did anyway with help from the girls. I hammocked also and even though it was cold i was in the perfect spot for the sun to hit me. I took a little nap but then i was so rudley interupted...you know who you are. Then we all went snowboarding and that was SO MUCH FUN! Even though the snow wasnt very good i think i have finally gotten really comfortable carving down the black which is an accomplishment. I also some how managed to get the digits of the rental dude...guess he saw something he liked....haha. Pictures of snowboarding are down below...we look good. Caitlin and Leah did some MAD TRICKS on the ramps.

Sunday we went to church at the Heart and it was seriously the perfect way to start off the week. So thankful for the people in my life that i can worship with! Going to church was great but it only made me miss my family that much more! SHOUT OUT TO BRIAN AND JANNELL AND THEIR BEAUTIFUL PICS. Hopefully i will be in Wilmington in just a few days with my family. Hearing all of my friends being home together made it hard not to be homesick and sad i couldnt be in wilmington with them.

SHOUT OUT TO KELSEY SMITTYYY for her 19th birthday! I had a wonderful dinner tonight with her and all of our friends....nobody what anyone says i had one normal peice of cake.

More to come tomorrow xxoxoxo HAYUP

THUG THURSDAY

Friends, Family, and Fans;

Today was extra warm in Boone town. We broke throught the 60's so there was quite a commotion throughout campus. Hammocks went up on Sanford, frisbees were thrown and i saw some attempts at tanning. I had a great day today, unfortunately the most interesting thing that happened to me was my minor contact lens scare this morning. My day was filled with class, lunch with Kelsey, typing a paper, hanging outside, laps in the pool and dinner and a movie with M. Oh and pretty exciting i tried on my summer shorts...THEY STILL FIT...now all i need is my 910 tan back. Thank goodness it is almost spring break. Called Beth today and she asked me what i wanted to eat over break....counting down the hours. I cant wait to feel the sand between my toes, eat my moms food, sit on my couch, play with snuggles, see my granny and maybe seeing the beautiful bride to be down in Charleston. This is the last weekend before Spring Break 2012 so i cant wait to have a great time with all my friends before we are separated for over a week. Stay tuned for whats to come this weekend. Hopefully some hiking and snowing is in my future.

XOXO HAYUP

Hi! Welcome to my blog. My goal for this blog is to keep my fans in the know of everything HAYUP. I go to school in one of the most beautiful places on the east coast. I wake up every morning to beautiful mountains and it is a constant reminder of just how awesome God is. I want to share my adventures and trials with those who choose to read this blog. I am only 18...there is so much of my life to come and I can't wait to share it with you.

Later Skater,
HayUp
